The month of June is turning out to be very special for singer Shashika Mooruth. Known for her  ability to express a wide range of emotions through her singing, her songs are now scoring huge  success in India.

Born and raised in South Africa, she was in Lucknow, India recently for an interview and recording  of her songs at the prestigious Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Academy which was established in  1963. Her host in interview was retired All India Radio director Shri Prithviraj Chauhan who was  very impressed by her amazing experiences as she shared her music journey from South Africa to  India.

!Whether I am composing or performing, I always have a visual in mind. I am drawn into a scene, my music and voice speaks from my soul to the soul of my listener. It is a reflection of my life  journey. I cannot describe it any other way, “ she said. I am especially very emotional on this opportunity to perform at the academy in Uttar Pradesh as my ancestors hailed mostly from villages  in these parts of India. Girmitiyas were indentured laborers from British India who were transported  to work on plantations in South Africa between 1860s and early 1900s. Though I have lost contact  with my families in these villages, performing in Uttar Pradesh still makes me feel as if my voice is  resounding and reaching out to them.

Her fan base in India has grown widely over the years. “As a descendent of Girimitiyas, the  comeback to India plays an important role in my life. I feel fulfilled to contribute and be a part of  music that hails from the land of my ancestors.”

Shri Tarun Raj, the director of the Sangeet Natak Academy was very interested in her profile as a  South African pursuing Indian music. On hearing her voice in a YouTube video he immediately  invited her for an interview and performance at the academy studio. She recorded three devotional  songs for the academy and was accompanied by Dr Pawan Tiwari on the tabla and Shri Nantu Das  on harmonium with Shri Sunil Yadav as engineer behind the production.

Interestingly Shashika draws inspiration from traditional influences and strongly recommends rigid  training in Hindustani classical music. Acknowledging the fact that music keeps evolving with time  she is also passionate about creating unique, powerful compositions that fuse with contemporary  sounds.

Hence it is not surprising that her song Tamanna from her romantic album Heart to Heart also  attracted the ears of Hungama Digital Media in Mumbai. June 21st was World Music Day and  Tamanna was shortlisted by Hungama for their Artist Aloud Spotify page World Music Day 2023  playlist.

This song is totally world music fusion stuff and composed by the one and only Neeraj Sridhar of  Bombay Vikings fame. Neeraj wrote the lyrics as well but in the remix version Shashika added a  few lines in English. The arrangement is by Tutun Roy. 

So it is a double success for Shashika this June in which she has shown her talent in India in both  classical and contemporary genres of her music.

A great show Swar Dhaorhar Festival took place in Jhansi with the collabration of ASI and CultureMinsitry, marking the final destination of the 75th Azadi ka Amrti Mahotsav celebration with Qila Aur Kahania. It was a massive event, attended by thousands of enthusiastic people who loved the concept and celebrated Indian culture with the Swar Dharohar Foundation. On the 17th of June, the music performances featured Zaina Khan, Padma Shri Ustad Gulfam Ahmed (Rabab), Hamsar Hyatt and Athar Hyatt (Sufi Brothers), and Salman Zaman (Sufi Rock Band). On the 19th of June, despite heavy rainfall, a splendid poetry show was organized, showcasing brilliant crisis management by the SwarDhaorhar team and local event partner Vasfame Entertainment.

The Swar Dharohar series of music and multilingual poetry started at India Gate in Delhi at the end of April ’23. The participating artists included Fareed Hassan (bandith bandish) and Altamash Faridi (Bollywood) in music, and Hussoan Sabri (Qawwal) and the renowned Deepak Pandit (violinist). Notable poets such as Waseem Barelvi, Surender Sharma, Arun Gemini, and more also graced the event.

After Delhi, the Swar Dharohar Festival moved to Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, featuring music performances by the Manthan band and Padma Shri Ustad Gulfam Ahmed, along with poets from across the country.

Another extraordinary show took place at Ramnagar Fort in Jammu and Kashmir for the Swar Dharohar Festival, featuring the fusion band Swaraag and the Rabab instrument.

In Telangana, a grand show was organized at Golconda Fort to celebrate Telangana Divas, with performances by India’s biggest star, Shankar Mahadevan, and multilingual poetry.”

A peaceful protest to save the integrity of Manipur was held on 17th June at  Azad Maidan, Mumbai from 3 to 6 pm. The protest was jointly organised by  the World Meetei Council (WMC), Maharashtra Unit, Manipuri (Meitei)  Association (MMA), Navi Mumbai, Mumbai Manipuri Solidarity Group,  Association of Manipuri Diaspora (AMAND), Pune and The Mumbai Peaceful  Protest Group. The groups observed a minute of silence to honour and pray  for the people who have lost their lives.  

Forty-five days into the violence, the Prime Minister has been silent and has  not made any appeal for an agreement or reconciliation. Over 100 people  have lost their lives and 60,000 people have been displaced, and taking  shelter in rehabilitation centres while reports of heavy firing is still coming  in every day. People are living in this war situation with multiple security  forces, mob build-ups and clashes in many areas of Manipur.  

Around 500 people from different communities and religions from all parts  of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Pune came to protest against  violence and demand restoration of peace in Manipur. With deep concern  over the ongoing violence in Manipur that has taken many lives and  destroyed villages, the Manipuri groups demanded immediate action from  the Central and State government.  

“No Separate Administration”, “We Want Peace”, “Help Us Modiji”, “Stop Hill Valley Divide”, “Meiteis also need Institutional Protection”, “Meitei Lives  Matter”, “Stop Deforestation- Save Manipur”, “Manipur is One and will  remain One”, “Restore Peace and Beauty in Manipur” were the slogans of the  protest. The protest was a call for peace and unity and a rallying cry against  any forces that threaten the cultural heritage and identity of this magnificent  land. The voices of the people resonated through the streets of Mumbai,  demanding justice and protection for Manipur. 

All the seven speakers of the protest demanded peace and action from the  government. Nabakishore Singha Yumnam, spokesperson of WMC, Lin  Laishram, an entertainment artiste and Robert Naorem, renowned  handloom entrepreneur appeal immediate action to stop violence.  Nareshchandra Laishram, Melody Kshetrimayum, Rohan Philem, and  Kheersana Yumlem protested against violence and misguiding people using 

false information, religion, and one-sided stories. Speakers stressed that the  violence is neither Hindus- Christian nor tribal-non tribal fight.  

“Why the govt is silent? People are killing each other. Innocent lives are  killed. Homes are burnt. It is heartbreaking that the govt is silent for 45 days.  This is not acceptable” Lin Laishram told.  

“Manipuris being citizens of India, we should not be neglected. We all have  the same rights as much as everyone else in India. Govt should restore peace.  The state is under internet shutdown for over a month. Children are living  without education. Price of food and commodities have increased. People are  suffering. My demand is no separate administration, our state should not be  broken”, demanded Robert Naorem.  

The Gujarat riot was stopped in three days. Violence in Manipur is going on  for more than forty days. Are we waiting for everybody to be killed? What is  the intention of the Govt? Are we alien? Are we not the citizens of India?  Manipur is a small state but has represented India in many international  sport and art platforms. Please save our lives and homes”, requested a  protestor.  

The protest concluded with a strong demand for pro action from the  government and to save the integrity of Manipur.
